How it works Assessment

An initial meeting with the young person and parents. The aim is to reach a working diagnosis. A comprehensive diagnostic assessment is done with attention to physical, genetic, developmental, emotional, cognitive, educational, family, peer, and social components.

An assessment is useful when a young person presents with changes in

* Behavior, i.e. social problems, difficulties with authority, strange thoughts, temper tantrums.

* Mood – i.e. sadness, anxiety, panic, self-harm, suicidal thoughts.

* Functioning – i.e. change in school performance in academics, withdrawal from friends and family.

Further investigations
Further investigations can be organized as needed to help in diagnoses:

* Psychological /Cognitive /educational assessment.

* Family assessment,

* Medical and physical examinations i.e. blood tests, EEG, ECG, MRI,

* Pharmaco- genetics i.e. genetic testing for drug compatibility.

* Using the Sensor-Detect computerized Senso BERA system to confirm diagnosis for ASD and ADHD.

With schools, medical specialists and other relevant agencies as needed.

Some of the conditions and problems that could be causing the difficulties are:

After the assessment is completed, a working diagnosis established, the opinion is shared with the patient and family at the end of a consultation and in a follow-up meeting.
Communication in the form of a report to the GP and the referrer is sent if the patient agrees.

Treatment options are discussed.
Together we devise/evolve a treatment plan with the child and family, based on the needs of the individual guided by the presenting problems.

Some of the modalities of treatment recommended in conjunction with a team of mental health professionals are:

* Consultation with other physicians or professionals from school, social agencies or other community organizations.
